1. Testament

One day after his death (May 20,1506) Columbus wrote his testament in front of Pedro de Inoxedo. In it, his first son, Diego Colon, was the heir. He also left some inheritence to his brother Bartolomé Colon and to Juan de Porras,Vizcaya’s treasurer. He named Beatriz as Fernando´s mother (Fernando was his second son)but he declared that they never married .He also named the small amount (in maravedis) that the Catholic Monarch contributed in the expedition in which he reached India( as Columbus thought). In this document he was named as governor, viceroy and admiral of all the lands that were discovered or which would be discovered in India.

2. Death and causes of the death

Columbus died on May 20, 1506, at about the age of 55. Columbus died of a heart attack caused by Reiter`s Syndrome (also called Reactive arthritis) that is an autoimmune condition that develops in response to an infection in another part of the body. Coming into contact with bacteria and developing an infection can trigger reactive arthritis. As it is written in his personal diaries, he suffered symptoms during the fourth voyage and during his lasts years. He died alone in his house in Valladolid thinking that he had discovered India instead of America, for him the new world. These territories were later called AMERICA by mistake. They were called America because in the journals of Americo Vespucci, published between 1502 and 1504, Americo was convinced that he hasddiscovered another continent that was not India as they had thought. Unfortunately, the new continent was called America because of Americo and not because of Columbus
